Christian Background
Clayton grew up as the son of a United Methodist minister. Baptized at First United Methodist in Lake Charles, Louisiana he also spent two years as a "home missionary" serving the church-based "Concerned Cincinnati Churches Consumer Cooperative" after college. He also worked for two years as a Small Group Coordinator at Wesley United Methodist in Charleston, IL shortly after leaving Cincinnati. During his time in Charleston he spent a year as a lay preacher serving congregations in Hume and Edgar, Illinois. His faith has been a prime motivator of his work as a community organizer and also as a conservation organizer.

"Public Lands At Risk" Slideshow Tour
As part of this tour as a Sierra Club employee Clayton spoke at local
churches regarding the importance of stewardship of Creation to the
Christian faith and tradition -- God made humans as part of Creation, we
are dependent upon it, and are partners called to care for it.
